Easter Portraits Through the Glass: A Story of Connection During COVID

In the early months of the COVID lockdown, families everywhere were facing the heartbreak of being separated from the people they loved most. For seniors living in care homes, those early days were especially difficult. Safety had to come first, but that meant many families were unable to visit their parents, grandparents, and loved ones in person.

At Accent on Seniors, our small board and care home in San Clemente, we wanted to find a way to help families feel connected during a time when so much felt uncertain. With Easter approaching, we created a simple but meaningful idea: portraits through the glass.

The caregivers lovingly helped each resident get ready for the day. Hair was done, makeup was applied, and each elder was cared for with the dignity and attention they deserved. One by one, residents were brought to the sliding glass doors, where Shay’s daughter photographed them from outside.

It was not a traditional portrait session. There was glass was between them, and the world outside felt very different than it had just weeks before. But there was also so much beauty in those moments. Each portrait became a way to say, “I am here. I am cared for. I am loved.”

The photographs were created as Easter gifts for the residents’ families, who were missing their loved ones deeply and unable to see them in person. During a time of distance, the images became a small bridge between residents and the people who loved them.

One of those portraits went on to win an American Photographic Artists award, a recognition that was deeply meaningful. But the true importance of the project was never about the award. It was about honoring the residents, preserving their dignity, and giving families something tangible to hold onto during one of the hardest seasons many of us have ever lived through.

That day remains an important part of the Accent on Seniors story. It reflects what we believe senior care should be: personal, compassionate, creative, and deeply human. As a licensed residential board and care home in San Clemente, Accent on Seniors provides 24 hour senior care in a warm home environment, but our work has always been about more than daily assistance.

Care is also found in the thoughtful details. It is in the way a caregiver helps a resident feel beautiful. It is in the effort to keep families connected. It is in the belief that every elder deserves to be seen, celebrated, and treated with dignity.

At Accent on Seniors, we are honored to care for the residents who call this home. Their stories, their faces, their families, and their lives matter deeply to us. The Easter portraits through the glass will always be a reminder of the love, resilience, and connection that can still shine through, even in the most difficult times.
